How I Work
Each individual brings their own unique set of circumstances and world view to counselling and for this reason I work in an integrative way, drawing on different therapeutic approaches as appropriate to provide counselling which is tailored to the individual needs of my clients.
The two main approaches I use are person-centred and psychodynamic. Working in a person-centred way means that I value each client as being the expert of their own life. I don’t offer advice, but rather I aim to create a therapeutic space which is both safe and confidential and where my clients can feel able to switch off from their everyday life in order to explore what is going on for them right now. It is they who decide which issues they want to bring to each counselling session, and it is they who decide the pace of the work.
I may also invite my clients to look at past events and experiences and to explore how these may be affecting their current feelings, behaviour and choices. We can look at patterns of behaviour, and patterns of relating to others. By gaining more awareness of your situation and the possible reasons for it, you may then decide to explore your options for change.
Counselling can be short term or longer term, or even for just one session. Again, you decide what you need.
